Q&A with Director Stephan Elliott via Zoom

Synopsis:

When drag queen Anthony (Hugo Weaving) agrees to take his act on the road, he invites fellow cross-dresser Adam (Guy Pearce) and transsexual Bernadette (Terence Stamp) to come along. In their colorful bus, named Priscilla, the three performers travel from Sydney to Broken Hill performing for enthusiastic crowds and homophobic locals. But when the other two performers learn the truth about why Anthony took the job, it threatens their act and their friendship.

Notes:

There’s never been anything like PRISCILLA.  This Oscar winning movie is possibly the most successful export ever to come out of Australia. Stephan Elliot’s drag outback odyssey is a hilarious insight into Oz macho culture. A glittering cast go to town on this never say die adventure that combines the Director’s wry humour, and sharp insights into what it is to be Australian.  As with Elliott's other films, warmth and humanity are everywhere. You walk out of his films feeling better about the world.

Priscilla became the forerunner, bringing drag into the mainstream.  From the ubiquitous stage musical to the Priscilla experience, this film has spawned an industry single handedly.  This the 30th anniversary of the film’s release and a fantastic time to celebrate the old girl’s achievements.

Reviews:

"The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert presents a defiant culture clash in generous, warmly entertaining ways. For all its glitter, this is the sort of film in which everyone becomes happier and nicer by the final reel." Janet Maslin New York Times

"It's a tremendous film that was ahead of its time on LGBT issues and, in some ways, is ahead of ours." Peter Bradshaw The Guardian

"The director steers his way between crudity and heartbreak with the utmost skill". Quentin Crisp

"I wasn't prepared for the generosity and gorgeousness with which Aussie writer-director Stephan Elliott turn this most unlikely road picture into something arresting -- if a tad sentimental -- in its naive vision of a perfectly tolerant world." Entertainment Weekly

"The plot of Priscilla isn't as important as the outlandish, wicked dialogue , the wild costumes and makeup, and the general high spirits of the entire enterprise." - David Stratton
